How to Play:

  1. Create a series of math problems tailored to different skill levels, focusing on addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, or any other topics you prefer.

  2. Write each problem on a clue card and hide them in various locations.

  3. Kids must solve the math problem on each clue card to unlock the next location. For example, a clue might say, "What is 12 divided by 4? The answer will take you to something with the same number of legs."

  4. Each solved problem reveals the location of the next clue. In our example above, 12 divided by 4 gives you the answer 3, leading to the next clue, hidden on a stool with three legs.

It’s math, mystery, and fun all rolled into one!

How to Play:

  1. Create a Scavenger Hunt Checklist:

    • List common items to measure, such as a book, a chair, a toy, or a table.

    • Include some irregularly shaped items for an extra challenge (e.g., a backpack or a shoe).

  2. Measure the Items:

    • Use a ruler or tape measure to find the length of each item in inches or centimeters.

    • For rectangular or square objects, calculate the perimeter by adding up all the sides. (Provide a simple formula: Perimeter = 2 × Length + 2 × Width.)

  3. Record and Compare:

    • Record each measurement on a chart.

    • Compare lengths to identify the longest and shortest items.

    • Compare perimeters to find which object has the greatest or smallest boundary.

Object

Length (in/cm)

Width (in/cm)

Perimeter (if applicable)

Book

Pencil

Chair

Picture Frame

Small Box

Toy

Shoe

Backpack

Bonus Challenge:

  • Find two objects with the same perimeter but different shapes.

  • Discuss how different dimensions can still lead to the same perimeter.

Hands-on activities like this can help kids practice measurement skills while encouraging them to engage creatively with their environment!

4. Marvin’s Geometry Art Gallery

Let’s get creative with geometry! This activity transforms basic shapes into stunning pieces of art.

What You Need:

  • Colored paper for crafting

  • Scissors for cutting shapes

  • Glue for assembling creations

  • Markers for labeling shapes

How to Play:

  • Challenge kids to create a piece of art using specified geometric shapes (like triangles, squares, and circles).

  • After they finish their artwork, they will identify and label each shape in their masterpiece.

  • Host a mini art gallery walk where each child shares their art, emphasizing the geometric shapes they used.

Imagine the creative energy as kids showcase their geometry-inspired art, turning a math lesson into a vibrant celebration!

5. Marvin’s Math Bingo Game

Who doesn’t love bingo? With a math twist, this game is both fun and educational!

What You Need:

  • Bingo cards (download the template below) with answers to different math problems.

  • Markers or chips for covering answers.

How to Play:

  • Create bingo cards filled with answers to various math problems, such as multiplication facts or basic equations. Check out our Free Resources for sample math bingo questions.

  • Designate a “Caller” who will read out the math questions.

  • Give each player a BINGO card and remind them to cover their Free Space or use a marker to color it in.

  • As the Caller reads off one question at a time, the players determine the solution and put markers on their cards or color in the squares if their answer matches. If a player doesn’t have a matching answer, they do not mark that square.

  • The play continues until someone has placed 5 markers (or colored in 5 squares) across a row on their card, down a column, or across a diagonal. This player will call out BINGO!

  • The Caller should check the answers on the winning card.

This simple setup can enhance math fluency and keep everyone engaged, making it an exciting way to reinforce learning.
